One of the greatest challenges for the profession in the 21st century is, undoubtedly, diversification. A session will be organized on Wider Fields. The topic to be discussed during this session is: in what other areas of economy or business (aside from the traditional ones) may we further the role of actuaries.

Curriculum
Stuart Wason is the head of MMC Enterprise Risk Consulting Limited (formerly, the Risk, Finance & Insurance practice of William M. Mercer Limited), an operating entity of Marsh & McLennan Companies ("MMC"). He is a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries, a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries, a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries, a Fellow of the Actuarial Society of India and an Honorary Fellow of the British Institute of Actuaries. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Toronto.

Mr. Wason has over 25 years of actuarial, financial reporting and insurance company management experience. Since joining MMC ERCL in 1992, he has been active in several roles as the Appointed Actuary for several life insurers, the valuation actuary for the liquidator of two life insurers, the Independent actuary in the purchase/sale of several blocks of life insurance business, the Independent Actuary in the demutualization of Mutual Life, peer reviewer of the valuation of life insurers, and as the actuary responsible for preparing appraisals of life insurers. He is currently advising clients in the area of Enterprise Risk Management.

Mr. Wason has been actively involved in the work of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries. He is a Past President of the CIA. He is currently leading a Solvency Working Party of the International Actuarial Association's Committee on Insurance Regulations. He has served on the CICA Task Force addressing changes to Section 4210 of the CICA Handbook and has been a member of the CIA Role of the Appointed Actuary Committee. He is a former chairperson of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries' Committee on Life Insurance Financial Reporting. He is co-author of the CIA Valuation Technique Paper on Valuation of Single Premium Annuities as well as being a chairman or panellist of sessions at several SOA and CIA meetings.
