President and Chief Executive Officer

In February 2001 Trevor Matthews was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of Manulife Japan, based in Tokyo with effect from April 2, 2001.
In February 1998 Trevor joined Manulife Financial as Executive Vice President, Canadian Operations based in Waterloo, Ontario.
Under his leadership the financial performance of the Canadian operations improved markedly and there was a significant expansion in Manulife's distribution capacity and presence on the Internet. He also brought the innovative, all in one, multipurpose borrowing and chequing account concept - Manulife One - to the Canadian marketplace.
Prior to this Trevor was General Manager, Personal Financial Services at the National Australia Bank which he joined in 1996 after a twenty-six year career with the Legal & General group of companies in Australia.
As General Manager, Personal Financial Services he had Australia-wide responsibility for the National's banking relationships with its three million individual customers. These responsibilities included personal banking, provision of financial planning, trustee, insurance, investment and other financial management services and telephone banking.
Trevor was Managing Director of Legal & General Australia from 1989 until his departure in 1996. Prior to that he held a number of different positions including that of Chief Actuary. He was the youngest person appointed to that role by any major life company in Australia. Trevor was responsible for introducing to the Australian market substantial discounts for non-smokers (in 1980) and living benefits for the terminally ill (in 1990).
Trevor was one of the actuarial pioneers in property and casualty insurance and won and shared prizes for his work. He was selected as Actuary of the Year in 1989 by the Institute of Actuaries of Australia and served as its President in 1997 - its centenary year. He also served on a number of industry bodies and was an inaugural member of the Life Insurance Actuarial Standards Board.
Trevor has an M.A. in Actuarial Studies from Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia and enjoys playing the piano, reading and traveling with his family.
