Biographical Sketch:
Charles is a Managing Director at JLT Benefit Solutions. He is an actuary with over twenty five years’ experience in the actuarial profession and has acted as principal actuarial adviser to several multinational companies and their pension schemes. Before joining JLT in 2006 he was at Mercer for over 20 years, becoming a Worldwide Partner in 2002. Charles has authored a number of actuarial papers and pioneered the use of modern corporate finance techniques in actuarial work. He advised the Boots trustees in their ground-breaking move out of equities into bonds. Whilst most of his career has been spent as an actuary working in the field of pensions, Charles has also worked for three years as an executive compensation consultant advising company boards and remuneration committees on all aspects of executive reward. He has also spent a number of years as an investment consultant and for a while was responsible for managing JLT’s investment consulting practice.

Charles is a member of the Council of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries and was Chairman of the Pensions Executive Committee of the UK Actuarial Profession from 2008 to 2010. He has led the Actuarial Profession's research into the use of discount rates and is currently Chairman of the UK Actuarial Profession's Discount Rate Steering Committee which has recently published a new framework for the use of discount rates in actuarial work. Charles is also the pension representative of the UK Actuarial Profession at the International Actuarial Association.

Charles is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries. He has a BSc from Durham University and he is also a Chartered Mathematician, a Chartered Scientist and a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications.
