Biographical Sketch:
Johann started his career as an actuarial analyst at AIG in London in 2002 where he worked in the Corporate Actuarial Valuations for 3 years before returning to South Africa at the end of 2004. He then joined the South African branch of UK owned Investment Property Databank (IPD) in Johannesburg as a Performance Analyst where he was involved in attribution analysis and benchmarking of commercial property investments of large property portfolios for pension funds, listed funds and some private funds. In 2006 he joined the Actuarial Valuations team in the Employee Benefits business unit at Metropolitan Life as an actuarial analyst and qualified as an actuary through the UK Institute of Actuaries in 2009. At the end of 2011 he returned to the United Kingdom as an independent contractor for 9 months at The Phoenix Group in Wythall, Birmingham where he was part of the assumptions setting work stream in the company’s Solvency II program. Upon returning to South Africa in the middle of 2012 he took up a position as a Senior Manager at PwC in Cape Town for 12 months working on actuarial audits and a Solvency II related project at South Africa’s second largest life insurer, Sanlam. In August 2013 he returned to Metropolitan Life, now part of a merged entity with Momentum Life called MMI. He currently leads an actuarial valuations team responsible for valuation and financial reporting of non-linked products within the Metropolitan Retail business unit. Aside from work, Johann spends as much time as possible on his mountain bike and at the golf course. He is a member of ASABA (Association for South African Black Actuaries) where he serves as mentor for students who aspire to become actuaries. In addition he also serves on his local ward’s management committee for one of the political parties in South Africa.
