PBSS: Exploring the European Union’s AI Act

This webinar explores the pioneering legislation of the European Union’s AI Act, the world’s first comprehensive regulatory framework for artificial intelligence. It delves into the AI Act’s risk-based approach to categorising AI systems, its implications for the insurance and risk management sectors, and its specific relevance to actuarial practices, offering actionable insights for actuaries to align compliance efforts with responsible AI deployment. The discussion emphasises the role of actuaries in ensuring AI systems are transparent, ethical, and aligned with societal and organisational goals. The insights provided aim to guide professionals in navigating the complexities of AI governance while leveraging its potential to innovate and manage risks effectively.

About the speakers:
Bogdan Tautan
With a background in economic cybernetics and actuarial sciences, he embarked on a professional career more than a decade ago. He started his career at Achmea, a large Dutch insurer, where he was most recently active as a Reinsurance Analyst and Capital Actuary. His role centered around managing and designing risk transfer solutions, and leading programs aimed at enhancing organizational efficiency through the refinement of actuarial quantitative tooling, data, and IT infrastructures. As a qualified actuary, his career was marked by a commitment to continuous development and the acquisition of quantitative, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Acknowledging the importance of contributing to the progress of the profession, he actively engaged in various committees and working groups, both at the national and international levels.

In 2018, he contributed to the establishment of the Actuarial Data Science Committee at the Dutch Actuarial Association. Since then, his involvement revolved around advising on changes to actuarial education, encompassing continuous professional development courses and regular educational programs.

Taking his commitment to the international stage, he joined the Artificial Intelligence and Data Science working group of the Actuarial Association of Europe in 2021. There, his contributions included co-authoring two discussion papers and recently taking on the role of Vice-Chair of the working group.

Claudio is a distinguished actuary who serves as Sr. Insurance Solution Leader within the Risk Quantitative Solution team at SAS Institute. As a dedicated member of the Italian Actuarial Association, he actively collaborates with both the International and European Actuarial Associations especially in the Data Analytics and AI areas. With a diverse background in consultancy, direct insurance, and reinsurance, Claudio's expertise spans multiple domains, including Insurance Data Analytics, Property & Casualty Ratemaking, as well as Explainable and Ethical Artificial Intelligence.

Moderator: Raffaello Marcelloni, PBSS Board Chair
Raffaello Marcelloni is an Italian fully qualified actuary. He started his career at the Actuarial Department of INAIL (National Workers’ Compensation Authority). After a four-year working experience at INPS (National Social Security Institute), he is currently working again at INAIL. He is the representative actuary of the Italian Society Of Actuaries (ISOA) in the Task Force on Adequacy of Pensions of The Actuarial Association of Europe, as well as in the Pensions, Benefits and Social Security Forum (PBSSF) of the International Actuarial Association (IAA). At IAA he is currently chairing the Pensions, Benefits and Social Security Section (PBSS). He is currently vice-chairing the Technical Commission of Statistical, Actuarial and Financial Studies at the International Social Security Association. He collaborated with the European Commission in several projects to support development of Workers’ Protection schemes in African and Asian countries. He has participated in many international events as speaker and has published several scientific papers on the web and for the Italian “Employment injuries and occupational diseases journal”.
