Joint Webinar by IAA – GAIN on Precision for Protection? Actuary’s Edge in Microinsurance Pricing

Inclusive and effective risk management plays a critical role in the achievement, and especially the long-term positive impact of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). A key component underlying risk management and insurance is actuarial capacity. However, in most low-middle income countries, actuarial capability is weak or non-existent. This is also compounded by a lack of data, particularly on populations most at risk and on emerging climate risk. This combination of limited actuarial expertise and data can lead to mispriced insurance products that may be unaffordable for the majority, providing little value for much of the population. Moreover, there is often a perception that the involvement of actuaries can deter the development of inclusive insurance products by using conservative estimates in turn making a product appear less profitable whilst incurring high expenses in obtaining the actuarial inputs.

Objective: This webinar aims to highlight the vital role actuaries can play in the microinsurance sector, especially in the context of developing and pricing sustainable and inclusive products. It will also serve as the launchpad for the more technical session that runs through the microinsurance pricing tools.

The session will look to explore the following questions:

What is the role for actuaries in microinsurance?

What are the challenges involved with actuaries working in this space, particularly within pricing?

How can actuaries as a profession address the capacity gap in low-middle income countries?

What are some of the actuarial tools and resources that can be helpful to the development of inclusive insurance products?
