Commercial insurance is a traditional people- and SME-driven business; success and company differentiation rely on technical underwriter expertise and proper management of commercial relationships. This has not changed fundamentally with the advent of Generative AI, and the underwriter as an expert will not be displaced. Nevertheless, technology today offers ways of significantly reducing the process friction, improving the underwriter experience and allowing the underwriter to focus on quality of the risk assessment, portfolio health and commercial relationships.
More importantly – where does this lead in the future? Will the underwriting process fundamentally change, new business models emerge, and the role of the underwriter be eventually challenged?
