Summary

Many public pension schemes have been introduced a few decades ago in an environment characterised by standard career profiles of individuals and by a stable and uniform family situation. The provisions of many schemes have been modified over the years in order to adapt them to changes affecting notably the labour market and the situation of couples. Many public pension schemes also had to review the level of their benefits and their financing mechanisms to face the population ageing process. This report presents the principal initiatives that have been adopted by the Quebec Pension Plan to face these changes and compares them to modifications adopted by the public schemes in other countries. It presents a reflection with regard to other projected changes and possible approaches to face them.
